Exclusive Interview: Rising Artist Sydmusiq

What is your name and what city do you rep?

My name is Sydmusiq and I’m from a small-town about an hour from NYC called Chester, NY.

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them? Lately I’ve been focusing on finalizing my album and making time to record visuals.  The album is named Why Not? because this whole music experience for me has been coming from the mentality of why not me? What do I have to lose? And Why not at least try?

What is unique about you and your music?

I don’t have an ulterior motive. I just make what feels good to me without trying to change what is because of what I think people may or may not want to hear.

What shaped your music?

My music always reflects where I am in life at a particular moment. I use my real life experiences when creating music and try to paint a picture in a way that I feel others will understand. I know when I go through things, I can’t be the only person going through them, so I keep that in mind when I’m writing my songs.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

I never had a plan of making an album right away. I also never really shared the music that I wrote or told anyone about my interest in wanting to make music. I initially hit up a couple friends who I knew made beats and had music equipment to get in the studio because I knew I at least wanted to try. Not many people were willing to share their resources. I started making music in my cousins basement and it wasn’t until I started hearing feedback from the people around me that I decided I would share it with the world through social media. From there I started to release new music weekly and shortly after that I decided I would release my first album.

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to a little bit of everything. If you scroll through my music library you can hear anything from Frank Sinatra to drake to Tee Grizzly. Im a big fan of music that tells a story. Of course, in the right setting I’m down to listen to pretty much anything, but if an artist can paint a picture with his or her lyrics, I am more likely to tune in.

What inspires you to write music?

Going through life day to day and navigating the ups and downs is what inspires me to write music.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

Basketball! I know it is a cliche answer but basketball was my first love even before music. Sports has always been an outlet for me and even though music is the focal point now, I always find time to get some shots up.

Happiness to you is…

Happiness to me is being surrounded by friends and family with good vibes. Its so easy to get caught up in the day to day so I always find it refreshing when I can get together with loved ones, enjoy a drink or two and have some good laughs.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

You don’t need a million followers, you don’t need a real life studio, and you don’t need everyone’s approval. If you want to make music, just make it. Write it down, record voice notes, practice in the mirror, and don’t count yourself out.

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

My 1st studio album “Why Not?” Is dropping on 3/18/22.
